Editing, Leadership, and Team Building

Weir Student Media is successful because of the dedicated student body. Amongst the several journalism classes, student leaders in each class work together to create and publish high quality content. I enjoy utilizing my position as a student leader to help the underclassmen create projects that they feel proud of. I am always willing to help others succeed by advising and building a cooperative, passionate team.

Building a united team is essential for a strong club/class. Icebreakers are the perfect way for students to get to know each other and build trust at the beginning of the semester. At WSM, we encourage a positive environment, free from judgement or discrimination, by providing a forum for expression early on in the class. The photograph to the left is an example of one of the icebreaker games in which students share and find common ground.

We encourage a positive atmosphere by celebrating achievement after a month of hard work. The example to the left shows my video journalism class participating in our monthly celebration.

In the fall, I attended the OSMA Convention at Kent State. I attended workshops learning how to improve my journalism skills and networked with students and staff. This experience taught me invaluable leadership skills that I brought back to my school.

Peer reviewing underclassmen's writing is a way to improve their writing, encourage a new perspective, and proofread for any mistakes. My classmates have established me as a trusted person to provide helpful constructive criticism. I included two examples of some comments I have left on my peers' essays.
