My Journey in the Fight for Student Press Freedom
Educating
Senate Bill 121
"The First Amendment protects our democracy and fosters civic engagement free from limitation. However, one group is historically limited from fully exercising their right to free expression– student journalists. West Virginia’s Senate Bill 121, the Student Journalist Press Freedom Protection Act, aims to change the narrative by codifying student press freedoms" -excerpt from my article on SB 121

Taking Action
I have taken action by following the progression of the bill and corresponding with the appropriate members of WV legislature. Most recently, SB 121 has moved to the education committee, so the emails on the left are to members of the house on that committee. I encourage my peers to reach out to fight for student press freedom.
Learning

Recently, I participated in the Senate Page Program at the WV Capitol. In this program, I spoke with several senators and other state officials. I sat in on the session and learned about how I can continue to use my voice for change. This particular day was special because the capitol was filled with people protecting queer and trans lives through peaceful protest. I do not have any photos, but I will use my experiences to fight for equal rights.
Sharing + Celebrating

WSM celebrated Scholastic Journalism week with a cookie cake. We shared this moment and provided additional resources throughout the week on social media.
My article was even published by the Weirton Daily Times!
